On 12 June 2019
a conference volume was organised by EKINT and TÁRKI on the issue of governmental manipulation and generating moral panic.
The first panel of the conference has consisted of three presentations by
well-known academics. Endre Sik, famous sociologist held a seminar on operation
and effects of so-called ‘moral panic button’, while sociologist Vera Messing
gave a lecture on her comprehensive study on social attitudes to migrants.
Then, Ágnes Urbán, media expert, economist, leader of Mertek Media Monitor gave
a presentation on mechanisms of governmental propaganda media and its social
effect. As the second part of the conference a panel discussion was held where
Márton Gergely, lead editor of Hungary's largest current affairs weekly HVG,
sociologist Márton Gerő, Zoltán Fleck and László Majtényi took stock of the
available legal, civil society and communication tools against manipulation,
moral panic and propaganda. This event was streamed live and a digital summary publication was also prepared
based on high quality videos which were recorded by one of our supporters.
